Every year, 35 million tonnes of electronic waste is exported to China to be scrapped. There the rubbish is broken down by hand, poisoning workers and polluting the environment. "Smoke from the computers is too strong to breathe", complains one disposal worker. "I feel dizzy and can't see any more". Many employees at the electronic disposal plant suffer from respiratory illness or skin diseases. They work for ten hours a day, with no protection from the hazardous chemicals.

SEEKING ASIAN FEMALE
Steven is a white man with a dream. Now in his 60s, he scours numerous catalogs and websites in search of a young Chinese wife. After fruitlessly corresponding with numerous women online, and even making some in-person visits, he finally convinces Sandy, a young woman from Anhui, to become his bride. However, when Sandy finally arrives in San Francisco, Steven gets much more than he bargained for.
Directed and narrated with considerable wit by Chinese American filmmaker Debbie Lum, who herself gets drawn unexpectedly into the story as the couple's interpreter and marriage counselor, SEEKING ASIAN FEMALE examines the effect that the internet, stereotypes, and racially-based dating preferences can have on love and marriage in the 21st century. Furthermore, Lum's linguistic connection with Sandy reveals on camera the subjectivity of a woman who decides to move across the world for a man she can barely talk to. Steven, who doesn't understand a lick of Mandarin, hasn't a clue.

When it comes to "yellow fever," many argue it's a two way street. In this webisode, Asian women confess reasons for preferring white men including that they're "more confident, better looking." Academics unpack the reasons why, including "hiergamy," the sociologists' term to describe a universal female desire for marrying above one's own socioeconomic status. An Asian American woman candidly describes lessons of racial hierarchy taught by her parents. Reflections from a black man citing online dating lessons support this: he wants Asian women, but they don't want him. Another Asian women -- a first generation immigrant -- tells of searching for Asian men on Craigslist, yet finding predominantly white men who will date her. To complicate matters further, a chorus of Asian American women emphatically states their refusal to date white men with "yellow fever" who see them "only as Asian." Psychologist Ben Tong quips, "but you are Asian." Statistics show Asian women disproportionately dating and marrying white men compared to other ethnicities and races. What do you think?
They're All So Beautiful is a forum on race and dating built around a five-part video series by the filmmaking team behind Seeking Asian Female. Each episode begins with a question to which the audience is encouraged to respond. Many of the questions posed have either been confirmed or challenged by Asian Americans and non-Asian Americans alike. Guest bloggers will contribute perspectives based on their experiences and spark further discussion.
