VIDEO of the CENTURY: Shanghainese Make "Human Mattress Dominoes" World Record!

-The US just did 850 earlier this year! Video below!

You may have played dominoes before, a game where cascades of falling tiles can fill up an entire room. But you've probably never played it like this. It's a new world record—one thousand and one human volunteers falling backward in succession, separated by "dominoes" of upright mattresses.

It took place in Shanghai's Qingpu District at noon on Saturday. The challenge required volunteers to put their back against a mattress, and fall backwards when the time came, continuing the chain reaction.

The chain started at 1pm and took 10 minutes to fully topple. Then it entered record books as the longest human mattress domino chain ever—so far.

[Cheng Dong, Authenticator, Guinness World Records]: [Male, Mandarin]
"I think they did a good job. First, they managed to do it at one go. To succeed at one go with some 1,000 people involved does not simply rely on luck. All the participants must have fully understood the rules. Second, our volunteers were all very brave. No one dodged when the 2-meter-long mattress fell onto them. So the challenge was very successful."

Guinness representatives say that the first human mattress domino world record was set by 256 Chinese participants in 2010, but the record was upset by 850 American volunteers in February of this year.

Are the Americans ready to make a go at the title yet again? Perhaps they will, if all the right pieces fall into place.

-I guess they broke this record from earlier this year!

A United Airlines flight from Shanghai, China, to New Jersey should have taken just 13 hours, but it took some folks three days to make that trip, after a firestorm of protests, threats, even violence.

United Flight 87 was scheduled to leave Shanghai Wednesday and bring 225 passengers to Newark Airport in New Jersey. The flight didn't land until Saturday morning after three days of cancellations, causing tense moments between passengers and United Airlines.

Kickstarter: From Sea to China Sea: Finding Your Own Road In The Busiest Place On Earth

-Looks interesting.

From Sea To China Sea: Finding Your Own Road In The Busiest Place On Earth

Bouncing down the Indian coast on an underpowered motorcycle. Crossing the Bay of Bengal by rickety ship. Wandering in the mad clatter of Bangkok. Bicycling through Hmong mountain villages in Laos. With an array of experiences before me, I’ll be exploring the population and transportation collision though the stories of real people and painting a vivid picture of their world through in my podcast, writing and photography.
So Many People
I live in New York City.  It's the most crowded place in North America, yet the population density is only about half that of Mumbai, India. We now live in a world of 7 billion people. How do people function in this chaos? What is it like to commute with a billion of your fellow citizens?  What is normal in the most crowded place on earth? How do people move through their lives?  How do you carry a sofa on a scooter? From cab drivers to college professors, I’ll meet and interview everyday people to examine these questions.

The Journey
Starting in Bangkok, Thailand where, I’ll start my bicycle journey of about 4000 miles through Southeast Asia. The exact route will depend somewhat on how the rainy season and social unrest has gone, but I will definitely make it through Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam and hopefully Malaysia and Myanmar. The ancient temples of Angkor Wat in Cambodia. The Hmong villages of the mountainous north. The French colonial settlements in the jungles of Vietnam. The Spice markets of Bangkok. Rain. So much rain. All on the agenda for Southeast Asia. With 4.5 months on the bicycle, there is truly time to explore the dirt roads and remote villages rarely seen by western eyes.
From Southeast Asia I’ll hop across to India where I’ll buy an old motorcycle to ride for the next 2000 miles. Most likely I’ll end up with a 350 Royal Enfield which is the most common motorcycle in India and has remained virtually unchanged since the 1950s. I’ll travel everywhere from huge cities to small villages as I visit charities and explore how people move through their world.

Finally, I’ll make my way to the north, eschewing other forms of transit and revert to my own two feet. For roughly 70 days, I’ll journey through Nepal and the Himalayas. I’ll meet the people of the highest place on earth and find out how they get around in some of the most inhospitable terrain known to mankind.
The Project
With a nod to the great broadcaster Studs Terkel, I'll be interviewing all types of people about moving through their world and bringing you the results via my audio podcasts, writing and photography.  Also, along the way I'll be keeping everyone up to date through my blog, facebook and twitter.
Pledge now, join the adventure and explore your world.

Markey (D-MA): China Burning US High Tech Manufacturing, Republicans Give China Gas

-What a jerk.

01:15:43I THANK THE GENTLELADY.
01:15:51CHINA'S RARE EARTH POLICIES DO BURN AMERICA'S HIGH-TECH MANUFACTURING COMPETITIVENESS, AND THE REPUBLICANS JUST WANT TO THROW GAS ON THE FIRE.
01:16:03AMERICAN NATURAL GAS.
01:16:05OUR GREATEST COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE IN MANUFACTURING RIGHT NOW IS LOW-PRICED DOMESTIC NATURAL GAS, BUT THE REPUBLICANS WANT TO EXPORT THAT COMPETITIVE EDGE TO CHINA AND TO DEVELOP A GLOBAL NATURAL GAS MARKET SO THAT THE UNITED STATES' NATURAL GAS PRICES TRIPLE HERE DOMESTICALLY OR QUADRUPLE TO MATCH THE PRICES THE REST OF THE WORLD PAYS.
01:16:32CHINA WILL NOT SEND THEIR RARE EARTH MINERALS TO THE UNITED STATES, BUT REPUBLICANS HAVE CONTINUALLY VOTED TO ALLOW EXPORTS OF OUR LOW-COST NATURAL GAS, OUR MANUFACTURING ADVANTAGE, TO CHINA.
01:16:47THIS IS A ONE-WAY TICKET TO MANUFACTURING OBLIVION.
01:16:55NATURAL GAS IN OUR COUNTRY IS SIX TO SEVEN TIMES LESS EXPENSIVE THAN NATURAL GAS IN CHINA.
01:17:03IT IS FOUR TIMES LESS EXPENSIVE THAN NATURAL GAS IN EUROPE.
01:17:07THAT IS OUR COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE.
01:17:12WHAT THE REPUBLICANS HAVE CONSISTENTLY DONE SINCE THEY HAVE TAKEN OVER THE MAJORITY IS TO PUT IN PLACE POLICIES TO EXPORT OUR NATURAL GAS THAT IS SIX TIMES LESS EXPENSIVE TO CHINA THAT WILL THEN BE USED IN THE MANUFACTURE OF EVERY PRODUCT THAT THEY WILL THEN SELL BACK TO US UNDERMINING EVERY MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY IN THE UNITED STATES AS WE SUPPLY THE VERY VALUABLE, PRECIOUS NATURAL GAS THEY NEED IN ORDER TO HARM DRAMATICALLY THE AMERICAN ECONOMY.
01:17:53AND WHERE DO THEY SHOW UP?
01:17:55THEY SHOW UP HERE WITH CROCODILE TEARS ABOUT THE RESTRICTIONS WHICH THE NATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION ACT PLAYS UPON -- PLACES UPON MINING FOR SAND, MINING FOR GOLD, MINING FOR SILVER.
01:18:14YOU REALLY THINK THAT'S THE WAY WE ARE GOING TO GET BACK INTO A BETTER COMPETITIVE STANDS AGAINST THE CHINESE -- STANCE AGAINST THE CHINESE AS YOU ARE SAYING NO, LET'S SELL OUR NATURAL GAS THAT'S SIX TIMES LESS EXPENSIVE THAN THE NATURAL GAS THEY HAVE IN AMERICA FUELING THEIR INDUSTRIES?
01:18:34POLICY.
01:18:34THAT'S JUST AN UPSIDE-DOWN IT'S JUST DEALING WITH THE PERIPHERY OF THE CHALLENGE THAT CHINA PRESENTS TO US.
01:18:43AND NOT EVEN IN AN EFFECTIVE WAY.
01:18:45RATHER THAN GOING RIGHT TO THE CORE OF HOW THEY ARE EXPLOITING THIS MINDLESS COMMITMENT TO NOT JUST AMERICAN PETROLEUM INSTITUTE, WE MIGHT AS WELL CALL IT THE WORLD PETROLEUM INSTITUTE BECAUSE THEY DON'T REPRESENT AMERICAN INTERESTS, BUT THAT'S WHAT WE HAVE TO DO HERE ON THE FLOOR OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.
01:19:05THAT'S WHAT OUR AMENDMENT TODAY OUR COUNTRY.
01:19:06WILL HELP TO ENSURE WE DO FOR I THANK THE GENTLELADY.

China Quote of the Day: The First Gay Superpower Since Sparta?

From the indomitable Mark Steyn in his book America Alone: The End of the World As We Know It:

"In fact, Russia might offer a solution to the People's Republic most distinctive structural flaw: the most gender-distorted demographic cohort in global history, the so-called guang gun or "bare branches." Since China introduced its "one child" policy in 1978, the imbalance between the sexes has increased to the point where in today's generation there are 119 boys for every 100 girls. The pioneer generation of that male surplus is now in its twenties. Unless China's planning on becoming the first gay superpower since Sparta, what's going to happen to the young men? As a general rule, large numbers of excitable lads who can't get any action are useful for manning the nuttier outpost of the jihad but not for much else. So, given Russia's own imbalance between sickly men of low life expectancy and long-lived robust women, it's hard not to see some mutual advantage in a bilateral mass hook-up for Slav women and Chinese men, even if the boys are a bit callow and the chicks somewhat long in the tooth."

China Quote of the Day: The Chinese in Cuba and Peru, eating Bananas and picking up Crap

From the late great Iris Chang's book The Chinese in America: A Narrative History which I lost the dust jacket years ago:

"Chinese slaves on the Cuban sugar plantations were made to labor twenty-one out of twenty-four hours, and, fed only about three unripe bananas per meal, many quickly died from hunger and exhaustion.... An equally horrific situation existed in Peru, where the Chinese were put to work on the Chincha Islands. The islands provided a rich source of guano (bird droppings), which Peru exported as fertilizer to Europe and North America. The unfortunate Chinese sent to labor on the guano beds endured both blazing heat and the unbearable stench of fowl excrement. Those too weak to stand worked on their knees, picking out gravel from guano, and guards stood sentinel on the shores to prevent coolies from accessing the only means of freeing themselves from their misery... hurling themselves into the sea."

Author Iris Chang explores the impact on American history by Chinese immigrants over the last 150 years. This is a look at the successes and failures of the American democratic experience as well as the lessons learned by Chinese immigrants that are still relevant today. 4 Videos: Meet a 16 year old Table Tennis Prodigy Ariel Hsing, Ready for Gold in London

-Amazing! Good luck at the games!

But unlike young prodigies in China — which has won 41 of the 76 table tennis medals to date — the 16-year-old Hsing hasn’t been perfecting her game at a table tennis academy since childhood. Instead, she’s an honor roll high school student who spends her free time polishing her forehand and spin serve and taking on the likes of Warren Buffet and Bill Gates.

China Quotation of the Day: Revaluing the Chinese Yuan, Good or Bad?

From Steve Forbes and his amazingly usefull (and dog-eared) How Capitalism Will Save Us: Why Free People and Free Markets Are the Best Answer in Today's Economy
"...fair traders want to pressure China to change the value of the yuan. This would result in a de facto tax on Chinese products. Chinese exports to the US would go up in price. The cost of those Chinese socks you bought would go, say, from $2.00 to $2.50. We'd buy fewer Chinese goods. Or the price of those computer motherboards imported from China would increase, driving up the price of American computers. People would be able to afford fewer PCs; the market for Chinese parts would shrink. Result: the US trade deficit would be reduced."

San Francisco Theft Scam Targeting Older Chinese Women. (Video Re-enactment)

-No subtitles?? This is silly!

Theft Scam Targeting Older Chinese Women. (Video Re-enactment) from San Francisco Police on Vimeo.
Between January and May of 2012, thirty elderly members of the Chinese communities throughout San Francisco were victimized by several Asian female suspects. The victims suffered losses of approximately $1,000,000 in cash and jewelry.

The scam involved Cantonese speaking suspects who approached the victims, one at a time, and convinced the victims, also Asian females that they were possessed by evil spirits. The suspects then offered to help the victims rid themselves of evil spirits by praying over their money and jewelry. The victims gathered their money and jewelry and met with the suspects who then put the valuables into a bag and prayed over them. When done, a bag was returned to the victims and they were told not to look into the bag for a period of time, less the prayers not be effective. When the victims finally looked into their bags, they found that their valuables had been stolen and replaced with other items. Three suspects were arrested and charged with many of these earlier incidents. They remain in custody pending trial.

In recent weeks, the Police Department has received several more reports of a similar scam occurring in the Central Police District. In these cases, the suspects were Asian females and the victims were elderly Asian females. The San Francisco Police Department has produced a Public Service Announcement (PSA) video to educate the public regarding this scam and to encourage victims and witnesses to come forward.

Anyone with information in these cases is requested to contact Inspector Kim Lewis or Inspector Julie Yee of the Financial Crimes Unit at 415-553-1521 or the Anonymous Tip Line at 415-575-4444 or text a tip at TIP411 and begin the message with SFPD.

San Francisco Police have also established a Limited English Proficiency Tip Line for the public to provide information related to this investigation in Cantonese at 415-553-9212 or 1-855-SFPD-TIP.

Pollution is still a problem but now Piranhas being Found in a Chinese River

-Can't wait for the Piranha Horror movie from China.

Man-eating Piranha fish attacked two people swimming in China's Liujiang River, over the weekend. One of the victims, Mr. Zhang, had parts of his finger bitten off and bites to the palm of his hand.

Following the attack, local fishermen are trying to catch the dangerous fish using an old-fashioned method called banzeng.
They use a fishing net supported by several bamboo poles.
A piece of of pork is fixed to the net as bait.

[Liao Bangzhu, Fisherman]:
"We'd put the net with the pork at around 30 centimeters below the water surface. When the fish rush to eat it, we will trawl the net."

There's a $160 U.S. dollar reward for every piranha caught.

[Xia Zanjun, Deputy Head of Liuzhou Fishery]:
"This is near the spot where Mr. Zhang was bitten, we assume that the fish are still around here, so we put the net here about 60 meters downstream from the spot."

Five fishing boats have also joined in the hunt.

[Liu Haijun, Deputy Head of Liuzhou's Fishery Supervision Agency]:
"This means the number of piranha might be rather small. It is like looking for a needle in a haystack."

However bloggers are questioning the environmental impact, concerned that harmless fish stocks will be depleted.
One Liuzhou-based blogger jokingly declared 'the people's war against the piranha has started'.
Some experts and fishing officials claim the piranhas may have been smuggled in from the Amazon as the climate in Guangxi is similar.

[Zhou Jie, Guangxi Fisheries Research Institute Expert]:
"Piranhas can reproduce very fast in environments similar to home."

So far there's been no sign of the piranhas but people are concerned as the fish have no natural enemies to keep their numbers in check.

China Quotation of the Day: China Clichés

From 查建英 Zha Jianying's classic (but now seems outdated) China Pop: How Soap Operas, Tabloids and Bestsellers Are Transforming a Culture, published in 1995:

"There are many clichés about China.  Often, they circulate with the aid of famous icons: the Great Wall, the Chinese box, Mao, the smiling panda, and so on.  The latest is Tiananmen Square.  Since 1989, Tiananmen has dominated our fantasy about China like a massive, dark, bloody cloud.  Despite a continuous trickle of coverage about China's economic reforms and the more recent interesting in the booming Asia market, Tiananmen persists.  The images of tanks, blood and the small statue of Liberty crumbling to dust still haunt us.  In the minds of the Western public, China's face is forever tarnished: once again the distant giant has lapsed into its repressive, backward pattern, which all the money and the cheap labor markets cannot quite redeem."

Where is Zha Jianying today?

Today in History: July 15, 1971 Nixon Announces Trip to China

-and the rest is history.

President Nixon announces that he has accepted an invitation to visit the People's Republic of China, July 15, 1971.

Nixon announces visit to communist China — History.com This Day in History — 7/15/1971:

During a live television and radio broadcast, President Richard Nixon stuns the nation by announcing that he will visit communist China the following year. The statement marked a dramatic turning point in U.S.-China relations, as well as a major shift in American foreign policy.

Nixon was not always so eager to reach out to China. Since the Communists came to power in China in 1949, Nixon had been one of the most vociferous critics of American efforts to establish diplomatic relations with the Chinese. His political reputation was built on being strongly anti-communist, and he was a major figure in the post-World War II Red Scare, during which the U.S. government launched massive investigations into possible communist subversion in America.

Kickstarter: Gloria Ng's Bilingual Chinese-English Kids' Affirmations CD!

-Let's get this funded.

ABOUT THIS PROJECT

As a Hong Kong immigrant raised in San Francisco and transplanted to Oakland with Cantonese-/Hakka-/Mandarin-speaking parents who brought me up in Cantonese, I frequently encounter a lack of bilingual resources both in print and in musical format in specialty bookstores, public/private libraries, gift shops, and even online specialty stores.

While plenty of bilingual media exists for English-speaking travelers and adult learners of the Chinese language, very few actually exist for a younger audience--especially for kids ages 0-5 years old. If they do exist, most of them are either checked out of the library or out of stock at the bookstores.

The lack of bilingual media did not bother me much at all before . . . until I became a mother myself. I now ask my mom why she did not teach me certain things in Chinese, and she tells me that there was no such media at the time. My thought now is, Why not create it?

Enter the Bilingual Affirmations CD

As my active toddlers challenge me to continue to develop an ever-expanding vocabulary of positive phrases and affirmations to use as a parent (yes, they are at the age of facing many rules to regulate safety and I slip into my "don'ts" many times!--and you know what that means cuz most kids don't hear the "don't" but hear the phrase afterward and the cycle repeats itself....), I realize that my kids (and probably other bilingual Chinese-English families) can only benefit if I created a CD in Cantonese, Mandarin and English that I can pop in at night to keep the boogie man away from their sleep and boost their lifelong self-esteem at the same time.

I imagine that this CD can come in handy for parents of children adopted from China, parents who choose to raise their children in Chinese language immersion schools, teachers/educators/specialists who want to play something in preparation for quiet time or nap time, and of course the Chinese American mom or pop raising their kids.

Since the experts say that our subconscious mind absorbs messages much more easily right before bed, this Bilingual Kids' Affirmations CD will allow me to choose from over 300 affirmations (e.g., themes in the CD will explore courage, sincerity, friendship/sharing, kindness, gratitude, etc.) in my ever-expanding collection and:

~ have my kids speak the affirmations right back at me! (Yes, a LIVE radio broadcaster/announcer "mirror" of sorts!) One of my favorite affirmations so far: "I am a problem-solving person. 我是一個解決問題的人。"

~ get my creative juices flowing in a different medium. (I've published books/ebooks, edited print publications, and made videos before; this will be my first "songwriting" project.)

~ make a positive difference in other families and schools raising their children in bilingual Chinese-English settings.

Pledge money goes toward:

~ Studio sessions (3 language tracks: Cantonese, Mandarin and American English)

~ Sound engineer

~ Feeding & compensating musicians

~ Jacket Design (including simplified Chinese, traditional Chinese and American English)

~ Mixing, Mastering, Printing, & Distribution (I want to use the 'zero-carbon' digipak cd case to be environmentally "sound" as well!)

Every penny counts (Project is funded ONLY when funding goal is met!*)*You will only be billed when project is fully funded.

~ Your kind help is very much appreciated. If you know others who may benefit as well, please share about this project. :-) I am looking forward to making the special gifts for all of us!

Thank you for stopping by!

All my best,
Gloria Ng
