Chinese entrepreneur and artist depicts the rise and fall of an ancient superpower in ‘Understanding China through Comics, Volume 2’

BEIJING, CHINA, May 28, 2012 – The first-ever graphic depiction of Chinese history, ‘Understanding
China through Comics,’ continues with Volume 2, covering China’s most chaotic history leading to its
golden age from the Age of Division to the Tang Dynasty. Post-70’s entrepreneur and author Jing Liu brings
Chinese history to life in his unique and beautifully illustrated comic series, which has been featured in several
prominent international media, including BBC Newsnight.

The second volume tells the story of the rise and fall of China’s Tang Dynasty, probably the world’s strongest
economic and military powerhouse of that time. Like modern superpowers, the Tang faced a variety of political,
social and economic challenges. But it also created a new, historic culture from the fusion of different races,
religions and philosophies that were assembled from the detritus of preceding warring kingdoms. Does this
China historical period hold any insight into the challenges China faces today?

Jing Liu notes, “To the Chinese, China’s rise to world power in the 21st century is called ‘the great restoration.’
But we learn from history that this rise is the result of embracing other cultures, not isolation or prejudice.
Volume 2 illustrates a key driving force, the evolution of fundamental Chinese philosophy. As an example, one
can note that, without adopting Buddhism, which originated in India, Tang Dynasty China would not have been
the center of the world.”

About the Author:
Jing Liu was born and raised in the era of opening-up Beijing. He is a successful Chinese artist and entrepreneur
who works regularly with international clients and has made many friends through his work and travels inside
and outside his native country. Liu graduated from Beijing University of Technology with degrees in industrial
design and engineering, and Master’s in international economics and trade.

With this illustrated guide in English to Chinese history, Jing Liu hopes to put China into its historical context:
for his newborn son, his friends both near and far, and for anyone who has ever had an even passing interest in
understanding China and from whence it came.
