Crocodile in the Yangtze: The Story of Jack Ma and how Alibaba Beat Ebay

-DISTRIBUTE DISSEMINATE DISPERSE! Let's get this guy's movie funded!

ABOUT THIS PROJECT

Dear Kickstarter Community,

I'm hoping to get your support to help share share a story which I sincerely believe can help inspire entrepreneurs and creatives around the world -- a film which Inc.Magazine called, "Gripping...Emotional...the real-life version of The SocialNetwork, only in Mandarin!"

The film is an independent memoir of my experience working alongside China's first Internet entrepreneur and former English teacher, Jack Ma. I joined his company, Alibaba.com, just as it moved out of an apartment and watched as the team grew to 16,000+ employees, challenging - and beating - eBay in China along the way.

After leaving the company in 2008, I was able to acquire 200 hours of footage from more than 35 sources which follows the company from its early beginnings into a global company and captures many behind-the-scenes moments. After studying film editing and assembling a professional team to collaborate on the film, I put something together which I believe captures the emotional ups and downs of life in a high-growth startup.

My driving motivation behind the film is to promote entrepreneurship and inspire others who may have a dream of their own. So within the film I candidly discuss not only Alibaba's successes, but also mistakes that were made by the company along the way. And I attempt to show at a very human level of the challenges entrepreneurs in China faced as the Internet brought China face-to-face with the West.

Where does your contribution go?

Your contribution will help cover the costs of licensing the archival footage & music used in the film as well as help me obtain E&O liability insurance so that I can secure global distribution of the film.

Any additional funds beyond the minimum will be used to fund costs associated with a screening and speaking tour to universities, business schools and events which encourage entrepreneurship.

As you can see - I offer some great incentives which include a Q&A for your company or organization in which I candidly discuss how a startup grew to a company with 16,000+ employees in just 10 years. So if you can bring a few people together to contribute, I'd even be happy to see you at your event or company to share the story for your own team to benefit.

Thanks for your support!

Porter Erisman

Director, Crocodile in the Yangtze

Who is the film director?

Porter first landed in China in 1994 and, after a year of Chinese language study, fell into a six-month stint as host of China Through Foreigners’ Eyes, a travel program on China Central Television.

After studying for an MBA in the United States from 1996-1998, Porter returned to China and worked at Ogilvy & Mather in Beijing, overseeing an Internet marketing group as China’s Internet began to take off. Lured by the excitement of joining an Internet startup, Porter joined Alibaba.com in April 2000, just as the company moved out of a small apartment.

From 2000-2008, Porter worked as a Vice-President at Alibaba.com and Alibaba Group, at various times leading the company’s international website operations, international marketing and corporate affairs. In 2002, Porter took a year off from Alibaba to travel around-the-world, during which time he spent two months riding a bicycle across China retracing the southern route of the Long March.

Porter’s career began in Washington, DC in 1992-1994 where he taught leadership workshops for high school students at the Close Up Foundation, a non-profit educational organization dedicated to hands-on education about the US democratic system.

Porter received a B.A. in Political Science from Stanford University and an MBA from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management. Additional studies include courses at the Beijing Language University and the New York Film Academy. Crocodile in the Yangtze is Porter’s first film.
