Beijing Auto Show Revs Up China Market

The nation's biggest auto show, opened its doors to media on Monday, with almost 90 global debuts and over 40 Asian premieres.

Interest in the Beijing event now rivals the worlds' top auto shows, reflecting the critical importance of the Chinese market to the car industry.

Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn says despite a recent slowdown, China will remain a key driver of growth as the world's biggest car market.

"Even though for the last quarter we have seen stable sales overall for the industry in China, I still forecast 5-6% growth in sales in 2012," said Ghosn.

"This rhythm of between 5-10% growth in sales will continue for the foreseeable future, so China should continue to do well."

Ghosn sees Chinese sales rising 10% this year to 1.4 million vehicles, continuing its momentum as the fastest growing Japanese automaker.

Making its global debut in Beijing is the all-new Nissan Sylphy, which sold over 100,000 units last year.

Nissan's premium brand, Infiniti, unveiled its M long-wheel-base luxury sedan, engineered specifically for the Chinese market.

The show also marks the official start of sales for Dongfeng Nissan's local brand, Venucia, aimed at first-time car buyers in smaller urban centers.

"In the next half of this year, we will launch the second car model from Venucia," Ren Yong, vice president of Dongfeng Nissan told the media center.
"Right now, we are doing our best and we aim to bring one new model a year to the market. So by 2015, we will be launching five new car models in the market."
With a trio of brands for every segment of the Chinese market, Nissan hopes its Beijing bonanza will further stoke demand and pave the way for expanding production in the country ahead.
