'China's Wings: War, Intrigue, Romance, and Adventure in the Middle Kingdom During the Golden Age of Flight' A book review

-Looks absolutely fascinating...

China's Wings: War, Intrigue, Romance, and Adventure in the Middle Kingdom During the Golden Age of Flight

From the acclaimed author of Enduring Patagonia comes a dazzling tale of aerial adventure set against the roiling backdrop of war in Asia. The incredible real-life saga of the flying band of brothers who opened the skies over China in the years leading up to World War II—and boldly safeguarded them during that conflict—China’s Wings is one of the most exhilarating untold chapters in the annals of flight.

At the center of the maelstrom is the book’s courtly, laconic protagonist, American aviation executive William Langhorne Bond. In search of adventure, he arrives in Nationalist China in 1931, charged with turning around the turbulent nation’s flagging airline business, the China National Aviation Corporation (CNAC). ... from Amazon

It’s hard to imagine anybody has anything new to say about that war, but Gregory Crouch has. His latest book focuses on an aspect of the war — and aviation history — that largely has been bypassed. He takes an in-depth look at the creation of China’s national airline and the role the China National Aviation Corporation played in the war against Japan.
What could easily be a rather pedestrian story becomes an engaging tale involving a cadre of aviation pioneers who established China’s air transportation system, were participants in the evolution of Pan Am into a trans Pacific airline and were crucial in Japan’s defeat.

Great book review at WSJ:

For the better part of the next two decades, Bond's life would be intertwined with the airline—and with China, which was soon attacked by Japan and plunged into World War II, followed by civil war and communist victory. Bond's adventures and China's ordeal are at the heart of the exciting story told by Gregory Crouch in "China's Wings."
Mr. Crouch is a West Point graduate and former infantry platoon commander whose previous book, "Enduring Patagonia" (2008), chronicled his obsession with climbing difficult peaks in South America. "Enduring Patagonia" was essentially a memoir; "China's Wings" is a historical narrative, displaying Mr. Crouch's talents as a researcher, portraitist and chronicler.
